Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic neurological disorder characterised by involuntary movements, emotional and behaviour problems and often intellectual impairment. HD is a rare disorder and it is easy to think you are alone. Yet the incidence in Tasmania is quoted as 14 per 100,000 which is twice that of other Australian States. Although there is now a better understanding of the effects of HD, there are still no effective treatments and no cure.
Back in 1978 a group of people decided it was time for HD to 'come out of the closet', for families to talk about HD and the effects it was having on them. Families could have someone to talk to who knew what they were talking about. The Huntington's Disease Association was formed.
Today the HD Association provides education, information and support to people with HD, their carers and families, those 'at risk' of developing HD and the broader community. We send out a quarterly Newsletter with news about our activities as well as up-to-dates on research and treatments to members and other interested people. A library of books, videos, fact sheets, etc is also available. We also provide advice and refer people on to other specialist services.
